Gears of lawsuit

Eurogamer: Inversion Preview [August 30th, 2010]

Tom spends a lot of time and energy in this article complaining that Inversion is “exactly like Gears of War. It’s uncanny. And a bit odd.” Yes, I’ll buy that the game may well have a similar mechanic, but visually it looks rather different. If anything I’d say it looks like they lifted Nathan Drake out of Uncharted and dropped him into Resident Evil 4, but obviously that’s just an analysis of some screenshots.

There are a ton of games out there with similar game mechanics. Y’know what happens to these games? They get lumped together into what people like to refer to as genres. I mean, what is Sonic The Hedgehog if not a faster Super Mario Bros.? What is Alien Breed 3D if not Doom for the Amiga? If you’re going to devote your time to complaining about games that seem similar to each other, you’re not going to have a lot of free time left. After all, if there’s one thing this industry does well, it’s borrow from itself.

Incidentally, you won’t find that quote in the article itself - it’s the article byline that appears on the Eurogamer frontpage and in their RSS feed. It’s also fucking stupid.
