Okay. First off, I am not a journalist, nor do I want to be one. I'm a
nerd with a blog that likes to write about games. I've submitted -one-
review to a gaming blog, but resigned from said blog because I didn't
feel like I could keep up with the other writers (they're very good,
while I am not). But even so, the person who sent you that message
doesn't really understand how reviews should ideally be made.
"Taking notes while playing would surely make it more cumbersome (with
the reviewer constantly pausing to take notes) and not provide the
reviewer with the same experience as the average gamer."
This comment really bothered me. The man is a -professional reviewer-.
He should know better than to just play the game and write an
impression based on whatever stuck to his mind. His job is to inform
his readers, the people who might be interested in the game, about it
(within NDA limits, of course). This doesn't just involve writing
about the game, a journalist is expected to take notes on whatever
he's writing about so he can create a much better article, after his
mind has settled and his ideas are flowing freely through his mind.
Hell, it's something my third grade teacher taught me when I was a
kid. I've played the few games I've reviewed over the years (again,
not on pro sites, just amateur stuff that's not very memorable) from
start to finish because I want to make sure I can absorb as much of
the experience as possible, so I can write something that's better.
I'm very bad at getting my ideas across, but I hope you got what I was
trying to say. If you didn't then feel free to yell at me in hopes of
me making sense outta this.
Keep up the good work and stuff.

I got it, yes. Thank you for your viewpoint, and I agree entirely.
Basically if Jeff were a friend who’d played the game at an event and he told me “what he remembered” that would be fine. But he’s not a friend. He’s a professional tasked with imparting an idea of what the game will be like onto the gaming public. He’s a fucking journalist, and there are certain expectations that come with that.
I like Gerstmann, and what happened to him at GameSpot was ridiculous to say the least, but this is just bad.
If anyone else has anything to say to me on the subject they’re welcome to use the “Ask or Submit” button on the sidebar.
