Two more websites copy + paste the Civ V patch notes in full into their news posts as if it’s something everyone has to read RIGHT NOW.

Edit: Fixed typo in the post title.

VG247 and Special K both decided that the patch notes were of such vital importance that they could only be read on their respective websites as opposed to, say, linking to the patch notes on the 2K Games forums or Steam’s copy of the notes, or waiting for users who actually own the game to see the notes when Steam automatically updates the game for them.

Again, whether or not “game gets patch” is newsworthy in and of itself is a debate for another time, but if you must post it as news, here’s how you should be doing it:

  • Summarize some of the more important patch notes in, say, a short paragraph.
  • Link to the patch notes elsewhere, such as the aforementioned sources.
  • Click “Publish” and step the fuck away from your computer.

I mean it. I want you to take three-to-five steps back from your machine, make a 180 degree turn, and go make a cup of coffee or something. Eat a bagel. Read a newspaper. Maybe check to see if the mail has arrived yet, or see if you’ve got time to pop into the bathroom and hammer one out.

All of these things are more productive and useful than copying and pasting the sodding patch notes into a news post that will mostly be seen by people who don’t even own Civ V in the first ruddy place. Honestly. People who come to your blog to see pictures of Japanese breasts or people dressed up as Master Chief couldn’t give a rhino’s left buttock whether or not selecting a great general causes yield icons to appear or not.
